| Beatie has a strange homelife her father is a highwayman and drunkard and her mother keeps disappearing for days at a time. Her parents are desperate for her to marry one of her cousins so that they can keep their land in the family. Then one night Beattie wakes to find a young man trying to get into her room she pushes him out through the window. | A very well written story, the descriptions of life at the time are wonderful. This is a gentle story of first love wrapped up in the mysteries of what other characters are hiding and the general pillage of warfare. I really enjoyed it. |
